How To Publish Engineering Research On Cureus : Step By Step Guide
At the root of innovation are insights drawn from carefully strategized studies. It couldn’t be truer for the engineering research community. From revolutionary inventions to disruptive transformations, engineering research has contributed greatly to academia, the economy, and society. At Cureus, we strive to break down the barriers that prevent qualified researchers from publishing their work. Our open-access journal is accessible, affordable, and agile. Most importantly, it is extremely easy to publish with Cureus. Let us show you how!
Swift & seamless publishing process
Cureus encourages research fellows, academicians, and students to broaden the impact of their articles through maximum visibility and rigorous peer review mechanisms.
In a few quick steps, authors can submit their manuscript with Cureus:
1. Sign up to join the Cureus community
2. Enter all information about the article, such as all co-authors with corresponding affiliations.
3. Add the article text along with any relevant media.
4. Disclose any relevant conflicts of interest and adhere to any relevant ethics statements.
5. Enter contact information for at least five potential reviewers.
6. Submit the article for Editor Check, a preliminary review by the Cureus editorial team.
Based on the review, the article will be transferred to one of the stages below:
a. Approved for Peer Review
Once articles meet editorial requirements, they are approved for peer review with no editing fees.
b. Preferred Editing Purchase Required
Articles in this stage may contain multiple formatting and/or language errors and need to undergo our Preferred Editing service to qualify for peer review. The articles that are deferred for Preferred Editing cannot be edited by the author.
c. 3rd Party Editing Service Required
Before resubmission, language editing from a third-party service will be required in case severe language issues are found.
d. Deferred for Revisions
Authors will be required to make necessary corrections to articles in this stage. In case the following and other errors in references, subheaders, spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. persist, the article may require Preferred Editing.
- Scientific/study-related revisions needed
- Too much text is duplicated from cited sources
- Tables that are incomprehensible, contain multiple values in a single cell, or are submitted as figures
- Missing media items
- Videos that don’t play
- Visible identifying patient information
- Figures that are blurry, stretched, skewed, too dark, or require cropping.
e. Desk Rejected
These are articles that are outside the scope of the journal, not applicable to the global engineering community, or are otherwise ill-suited for publication (e.g. faulty study design).
f. Blocked
These articles violate our submission policies (e.g. plagiarism, academic fraud, attempts to circumvent peer or editorial review). Submitting authors of articles blocked for plagiarism or fraud will be permanently banned from Cureus.
How Peer Review Works
To clear preliminary acceptance and be approved for peer review, articles need to
- Meet all Cureus editorial requirements
- Use Preferred Editing service if required
- Utilize Professional third-party language editing services if required
Once an article is approved for peer, invitations are emailed to the author-suggested reviewers and six reviewers automatically invited by Cureus. Authors can invite new reviewers and send reminders to previously invited reviewers via the author dashboard during peer review.
After receiving two Cureus-invited reviews, authors can choose to wait for additional feedback or proceed to revise the article and respond to each reviewer’s comment.
Authors may opt to end the peer review period, expiring outstanding reviews, excluding those started within the last 48 hours.
For articles with a Cureus Laureate author, only one review from a Cureus-invited reviewer is required.
Once the article is submitted for Editor Approval, an associate editor conducts a final review to confirm suitability for publication.
If the revised manuscript doesn’t adequately reflect reviewer feedback, the associate editor may defer publication and notify the author of further required revisions.
Illegitimate completed peer reviews will be rejected, and the article may be returned to peer review if it no longer meets Cureus review requirements.
Following the associate editor’s review, the article enters the copy editing queue, with potential deferral for formatting and language revisions before final approval.
The copy editor may contact the author with queries, and once copy editing is complete, the author is notified to sign in and publish the article from their dashboard.
